What is Sinus Augmentation?

A sinus augmentation, also called a sinus lift, is a specialized surgical procedure that helps create enough bone structure in the upper jaw to support dental implants. Dental implants rely on strong, healthy jawbone to ensure long-term success and stability. If bone has been lost due to injury, gum disease, or natural anatomy, a sinus augmentation can restore bone volume and make implants possible.

Why Is It Needed?

  • To prepare the upper jaw for dental implants.

  • To replace bone lost from periodontal disease or tooth loss.

  • To improve the long-term success rate of implant treatments.

Without sufficient bone, implants may not properly integrate with the jaw. A sinus lift ensures the implant has the support it needs to function like a natural tooth.

Benefits of Sinus Augmentation

  • Increases the success rate of dental implants.

  • Restores function for chewing and speaking.

  • Enhances facial appearance and stability of replacement teeth.

The Procedure

Series of illustrations showing steps in a dental implant procedure: drilling into the jawbone, inserting an implant, attaching an abutment, adding a support device, and placing a crown on the implant.
  1. Making a small incision near the upper molar or premolar region.

  2. Gently lifting the sinus membrane upward to create space.

  3. Filling the space with bone graft material (from your own body, a donor, or synthetic materials designed to stimulate bone growth).

  4. Closing the incision and allowing the area to heal before implants are placed.

Healing typically takes several months, during which the new bone integrates with your natural bone, creating a strong foundation for implants.

How long is the healing process after a sinus lift?

Healing usually takes 4–9 months, depending on your body’s natural healing ability and the type of graft used. Implants are placed only after the bone has matured enough to support them.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients report only mild discomfort. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia (and sedation if needed), and any post-surgical soreness is typically managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

Where does the bone graft material come from?

Bone grafts may come from your own body, a donor source, or synthetic bone-like materials designed to encourage natural bone growth. Your doctor will recommend the best option for your case.

Are there risks with sinus augmentation?

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks, including infection, sinus membrane perforation, or graft failure. However, these risks are rare and can often be managed successfully if they occur.

Who is a good candidate for sinus augmentation?

Anyone missing upper back teeth with insufficient bone height, or anyone previously told they lack enough bone for dental implants, may be a candidate.
