What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment designed to thoroughly clean the gums and teeth below the gumline. The procedure removes plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacteria that cause inflammation of the gums (gingiva) and surrounding bone.

This treatment is highly effective for patients with gingivitis (early gum disease) and those with moderate to severe periodontal disease.

What to Expect During Treatment

Comprehensive Exam
Your dentist or periodontist will perform a full examination, which may include X-rays and measuring pocket depths, before recommending treatment.

  1. Scaling
Using specialized instruments or ultrasonic tools, calculus and plaque are removed from the tooth surfaces both above and below the gumline. In some cases, antimicrobial solutions may be delivered below the gums to help reduce bacteria.

  2. Root Planing
The tooth roots are smoothed to remove toxins and bacteria. This makes it harder for bacteria to reattach, promoting healing and gum reattachment.

  3. Healing Support
In some cases, antibiotics may be placed in the gum pockets to soothe inflammation and speed recovery.

  4. Follow-Up Care
At your next appointment, your gums will be re-evaluated. If pocket depths remain above 3mm, additional or more advanced treatments may be recommended.

Why Scaling and Root Planing May Be Needed

Disease Prevention
Harmful bacteria from gum infections can travel through the bloodstream and have been linked to conditions like heart disease and lung infections. Treating gum disease early helps prevent these risks.

  1. Tooth Protection
When gum pockets exceed 3mm in depth, they can trap bacteria that damage bone and gum tissue. Over time, this can lead to tooth loss. Scaling and root planing reduce pocket depth and protect teeth.

  2. Aesthetic Benefits

This treatment removes plaque and tartar buildup. As an added bonus, it can also improve the appearance of teeth by reducing superficial stains.

  3. Fresher Breath

Persistent bad breath (halitosis) is often caused by bacteria and food particles below the gumline. Deep cleaning treatments help restore fresher breath.

  4. Heart Disease and Alzeihmer’s

According to America Heart Association and Academy of Periodontology, periodontal disease has a direct link to heart disease. Presence of bacterial infection in the mouth has a potential to spread to the body including the heart and can cause bacteremia. Evidence shows the presence of periodontitis causing bacteria in the brain tissue of alzeihmer’s patients creating a potential link between gum disease and alzeihmen’s
