Dental implants are a fixed solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring the health and function of your smile. They provide a strong, stable foundation for natural-looking teeth and can also secure partial or complete dentures, eliminating the need for removable appliances.

The Implant Process

Getting a dental implant involves several steps over a few months:

  • Consultation & Planning

    • X-rays and impressions are taken to assess bone health, gum tissue, and spacing for implants.

  • Extraction and bone graft

    • If the tooth is still present, then the tooth is extracted followed by the placement of a bone graft at the same time. The site will typically heal for 3-4 months before the placement of a dental implant.

  • Implant Placement

    • The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia.

    • The implant integrates with the bone during a healing period of 3–6 months.

  • Abutment & Restoration

    • A small post (abutment) is attached to the implant to hold the replacement tooth.

    • A custom crown, bridge, or denture is designed and secured for a natural look and feel.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of biocompatible material (usually titanium) that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implant integrates with the bone, it provides a durable anchor for a replacement tooth, bridge, or denture. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth, enhancing your smile and improving oral health.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer many benefits beyond aesthetics:

  • Replace one or more missing teeth without impacting adjacent teeth

  • Prevent teeth from shifting, which can cause bite problems or jaw pain

  • Restore chewing ability, speech, and digestion

  • Enhance facial structure and prevent bone loss

  • Support bridges or dentures, making them more secure and comfortable

  • Provide a long-term solution with proper care and maintenance

Why do I need a bone graft after extraction?

  • A bone graft placement at the time of extraction will ensure that there is adequate bone for a dental implant placement.

  • Jaw bone typically starts to resorb after a tooth extraction. Bone graft placement helps in maintaining the dimensions of the bone for future implant placement.

  • Bone graft also reduces the risk of dry socket which is a complication that can occur after extraction.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are strong, stable, and highly durable, often lasting many years with proper care. Occasionally, they may need adjustments or replacement due to normal wear.

Caring for Your Implants

Good oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, and regular dental visits are essential to ensure the long-term success of your implants.
