Crown Lengthening
Reshape your gumline for healthier teeth and a more balanced smile.
Crown lengthening is a common periodontal procedure that reshapes gum tissue—and in some cases, underlying bone—to expose more of the natural tooth.
This treatment can be done for a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even the entire gumline. While it is often used to prepare for restorative or cosmetic procedures, it is also highly effective for correcting a “gummy smile,” where excess gum tissue covers too much of the teeth.
What Is Crown Lengthening?
Benefits of Crown Lengthening
Restoring Damaged Teeth
Trauma, decay, or periodontal disease can damage teeth beneath the gumline. Crown lengthening exposes more of the tooth, allowing space for a secure restoration.Cosmetic Enhancement
Excess gum tissue can make teeth appear short and increase susceptibility to infection. Reshaping the gumline restores balance and improves the appearance of the smile.Supporting Dental Crowns
This procedure creates proper space between the crown and jawbone, preventing irritation or damage to gum tissue and bone once the crown is placed.
What to Expect During the Procedure
1. Preparation
Crown lengthening is typically performed under local anesthetic. Any existing crowns are removed before treatment and replaced afterward.
2. Reshaping Gum Tissue (and Bone, if Needed)
Small incisions are made to gently separate the gums from the teeth. Even if only one tooth requires treatment, neighboring teeth are often included to ensure a natural, even contour.
In some cases, only gum tissue is removed.
In others, a small amount of bone is also reshaped using specialized instruments.
3. Finishing the Procedure
Once the teeth have sufficient exposure, the area is cleaned and the gums are sutured in place. A protective dressing may be applied to promote healing.
4. Healing Process
Teeth will appear longer immediately after the procedure due to the new gumline position.
Full healing typically occurs in 2–3 months.
Patients may be prescribed medication or a chlorhexidine mouth rinse to prevent infection and aid recovery.

Is crown lengthening painful?
The procedure is performed with local anesthesia, and most patients report only mild discomfort afterward, which can be managed with medication.
How long does recovery take?
Initial healing takes about 1–2 weeks, with complete healing and gum reshaping finalized in 2–3 months.
Will my smile look different right away?
Yes. The teeth will appear noticeably longer immediately after treatment, creating a more balanced and aesthetic smile.
Can crown lengthening be cosmetic only?
Absolutely. While often used for restorative needs, crown lengthening is also performed solely to enhance smile appearance.
